The League of Arab States

The League of Arab States, which is considered as the oldest regional organization, was established on March 22, 1945, on the basis of the close relationsbetween the Arab countries and peoples. Its membership has grown from seven (07) founder countries to twenty-two (22) Arab countries, which are: The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, the Kingdom of Bahrain, the Republic of Tunisia, the Democratic People’s Republic of Algeria, the Republic of Djibouti, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Republic of Sudan, the Arab Republic of Syria, the Federal Republic of Somalia, the Republic of Iraq, the Sultanate of Oman, the State of Palestine, the State of Qatar, the United Republic of Comoros, the State of Kuwait, the Lebanese Republic, the State of Libya, the Arab Republic of Egypt, the Kingdom of Morocco, the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, the Republic of Yemen.Its main goals, stated in the founding charter are: 

1-To strengthen the relations between the Arab countries,

2-To coordinate political plans among Member States in aim to materialize cooperation and to preserve their independence and sovereignty.

3-To achieve cooperation in economic, cultural, social and health affairs and others. 

4-The general consideration of Arab Countries’ matters and interests.

The League of Arab States, based in Cairo (Egypt), consists of three main branches: The League Council at its three levels (the summit, the ministerial council and the permanent delegates), the General Secretariat,the permanent committees in addition to the organs established by the Mutual Defence Treaty concluded in 1950 and those established by resolutions issued by the Council League of Arab States.  

The General Secretariat of the League of Arab States is the pillar of the common Arab action system, together with specialized Arab organizations, joint Arab labor institutions and specialized ministerial councils. 

Algeria joined the League of Arab States on August 16, 1962, immediately after the recovery of the national sovereignty. However, it placed its attachment to the Arab and Islamic nationat the center of its liberation war against the French colonialism, which was showed in various aspects of support and help provided by Arab States and peoples.

Algeria has hosted three (03) Arab summits: the first in 1973, the second in an extraordinary session in 1988, exactly in support of the Palestinian Intifada and the last in 2005. 

The League of Arab States adopted the decision of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid TEBBOUNE, to announce the first and the seconddays of November 2022 as the date for the holding of the Arab Summit in Algeria, in conjunction with the 68th anniversary of the Glorious Liberation Revolution. A date which is devoted to the solidarity of the Arab states & peoples with the Algerian Revolution, considered as a symbol of hope in the present history of the Arab Nation.

During this Arab date, Algeria is endeavoring to give a new spirit and motivation to the joint Arab action on the basis of primacy of the common and combinedfactors, including the Palestinian cause, to enable the Arab nation to make its voice heard, and to interact and effect positively the events and the fast changes at the local and international levels. 

During the 41st Session of the Arab Permanent Post Committee, held in Algeria (Algiers) on June 8/9, 2022, Algeria’s proposal about issuing a unified Arab postage stamp for 2022 was approved by the Arab Permanent Post Committee. The Arab Summit, an event of a great importance and which will be held in Algeria (Algiers) on next November 01/02, 2022, is expected to be the theme of this unified Arab stamp.
